Kingdom come

Wednesday, November 8 2006 | Colson: Christians must never desire the luxury of 'fasting from politics'

America is not the Kingdom of God and never will be. The Kingdom of God is not America and never will be. But Christians have both rights and responsibilities in every democracy they inhabit, to act justly to and for all people in the society, and this is doubly applicable in those democracies they gave birth to.

And there can never be a hiatus from doing what's right every time the opportunity presents itself.

Hello Jon! You may remember me, we had lunch with you one day a long time ago. I enjoy your news site very much.

I admit to being tempted to "fast from politics." I was pretty political before I became a Christian, but it interests me only in a sideline way now. The further society moves away from a Christian worldview, the more tempting it is to accept our "fate" as a fringe group.

Hi erudit...er, Gina,
With more clues from your online profile I do well remember meeting you and your fiance for lunch. I'd been thinking of the two of you recently because I read a worthwhile book about Coptic Christian monasticism (with lots of interesting insights into Christianity in Egypt in general) by an American Catholic monk. It's Journey Back to Eden, My Life and Times Among the Desert Fathers, by Mark Gruber, OSB, from Orbis Books. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. There might even be a copy left in the St. Stephen's bookstore (open after divine liturgy c. 11 a.m. Sundays).

I've had a quick glance on your blog and am looking forward to exploring more deeply.

Many thanks for checking in.
Christ is in our midst,
jon
